STEM learning

Year 6 welcomed a visit from Yorkshire Water this week who brought in some very exciting equipment to use. We learned about the issues that Yorkshire Water have when trying to remove blockages from their system in various places within the community and about the sorts of things that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet and sink. Children worked in groups to build a Lego robot and then code it to travel from a variety of points on a map and bring blockages to the recycling centre. We loved the coding aspect and the staff from Yorkshire Water were incredibly impressed with Year 6’s fantastic coding skills: they said we were the fastest school ever in building the robots and had several groups who were able to run a full programme dealing with every blockage.

Science Superstars

Year 6 escaped from the heat this week by going into 6J (with air conditioning – lucky them) and watching the auditions for Science Superstars. What an amazing group of scientists we have! From bouncing bubbles to flying teabags, the children were confident and eloquent when describing the science behind their impressive experiments. The final Science Superstars Assembly will be on Friday 10th July and finalists will need to have their equipment and explanations ready on the day.

Residential

ALL children should bring their residential suitcase and sleeping bag to school on Monday (even 6J!) The luggage will be brought to How Stean on Monday with 6D and will be returned on Friday. Here is a letter which was sent home via email from Mrs Hawkhead this week detailing final arrangements
