Year 1 News – 19.6.26

English

This week, the children have written a recount of our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. The children have impressed us with their use of time connectives, conjunctions and adjectives.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about Place Value within 100. The children have been counting to 100 and partitioning numbers.

The children particularly enjoyed playing a maths game focused on counting in 10s and 1s. If the bean bag landed on red, it scored 10 points, and if it landed inside the yellow, it scored 1 point!

Science

In science, we learnt that animals can be categorised into five main groups. These groups are birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians and fish. We looked at the features of each group, then spent time as ‘Poo detectives’ identifying and classifying a range of animals.

History

In history, we looked at this picture of the seaside from nearly 100 years ago.

We discussed what the picture might be of and what it might be used for. The children made some fantastic suggestions, including a lifeboat, a car and a way of transporting water.

We discovered that it was a picture of a bathing machine. In Victorian times, people would get changed into their swimwear in a bathing machine. The bathing machine would then be pulled out to sea and people would get out of it and straight into the sea to swim and bathe.

The children have loved bringing a little piece of the seaside into our outdoor provision! A huge thank you to all the families who made this possible by kindly bringing in resources and materials.

Computing

In computing, we started our new unit on pictograms. We found out that a pictogram is a visual way of displaying data through a picture. The children then created their own whole-class pictogram to investigate how we travel to school.

PPA Rotation

This half term, the children are doing the following lessons on a Friday afternoon.

RE – Learning about why we care about people

Art – Creating clay animals

Art – Looking at animal prints and creating their own

DT – Making a fruit smoothie

Animal Workshop

To enhance our animal science topic, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Wednesday 1st July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.62, please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 26th June.  If you need a reminder of your login details, please contact the office. Thank you to everyone who has already paid.

Science Competition

We will be very busy on Wednesday 1st July, as we are also holding our class auditions in the afternoon. Please make sure that your child brings everything they need that day. We have some great prizes for the whole school winners, including a family ticket to The Deep and a family ticket to Magna. The grand final is on Friday 10th July. (Your child doesn’t have to take part if they don’t want to.)

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
