Farsley Farfield Primary School

5K residential 2026 Day 2

Good evening parents and carers,

We have had a wet but fantastic day. The children have absolutely done us proud with their Farfield attitude despite being soaked through (and a bit cold).

This morning group 2 went cycling and everyone completed a tricky blue route of mountain biking at Gisburn Forest. There were a couple of falls but no major injuries and everyone got back on and gave it their all. A special mention to Rory who did an extra challenging section with the coaches at the end. This was a very wet session!

Meanwhile, the other group went caving. Due to the conditions, they had to change the plan and go to some brand new caves called Yordas which means giant. The children completed all the tricky challenges. (We were grateful to our caving instructor’s local knowledge, going to the far side of Whernside for the first time.)

In the afternoon, the groups swapped and the less confident group went cycling. They all really impressed the instructors and ended up making huge improvements. Most did the blue loop with a couple staying closer to the car park with Rebecca, one of our instructors from British Cycling. The other group attempted the same caves as the morning but could not get quite as far in due to the rising water and huge waterfall coming out! Even White Scar Caves – an alternative tourist activity for some non-cyclists – was inaccessible due to the terrible weather.

Because some of the activities were cut short, the children have ended up having a little more recreation time than usual and are becoming masters of pool and table tennis!

We have been so proud of how organised everyone has been and how well everyone has got on with each other; fingers crossed for a bit more sunshine tomorrow.
