Week 3
Maths
This week, we have started a new unit on Fractions. This is another unit building on our previous knowledge. We have recapped the meaning of a fraction and started the week by adding and subtracting. Children then used their understanding of a whole to partition different fractions and add different values using bar models and part-whole models.
English
This week we had lots of fun learning about the news! Children began the week by reading different newspaper reports, including a gorilla hunt and a mysterious person entering the three little bears’ house, before moving on to read about Emperor Claudius and Romans visiting! Children enjoyed reading through the different articles and summarising the key points. We learned that news isn’t always delivered the same way and can also be presented visually. Children enjoyed watching the news and shared what they liked about it.
After reading different news articles, children identified similarities among them and used them to identify features in a newspaper article all about ‘A man on the moon.’ Children enjoyed sharing what they liked about newspapers; headlines were among the features they found catchy. Children wrote their own headlines about the eruption in Pompeii linked to our class text, ‘Escape from Pompeii’. Next week, we will continue to develop our understanding of newspapers to help us write newspaper reports.
Science
This week was all about transportation. Children shared what they think a plant needs, including sunlight, air, and space. This week’s focus was water – the question thought about how water travels through a plant, and was shocked to learn that even without roots, water can still travel through a plant. Children learned about the significance of the stem and how water is transported, and they shared their understanding through a diagram and short explanations.
PSHE
Our unit this term is all about saving, spending and budgeting. Children were up for a challenge and enjoyed working with a budget to purchase classroom essentials, but what is essential? This led to lots of interesting discussions. After learning more about budgeting and money management, children worked on another budgeting challenge using a spreadsheet.
