Farsley Farfield Primary School

Happy Easter!

We have had another lovely term in Year 3 filled with so many interesting topics, from our amazing bodies to exploring Antarctica!

Maths
This week, we have started our new unit on mass and capacity.  We began the week looking at different scales and number lines. Children used their division skills to determine the values of different intervals on number lines. We learned more about when we use grams and about recognising different measurements on a scale. Children still had to work out the difference between values and the measurement of each interval to help them work out the value of different objects. We spent the rest of the week using kilograms and grams to work out values on scales.

English
Subordinating conjunctions and clauses have been a key focus for us this week. Children reviewed their learning on subordinating conjunctions and used them to write different sentences with the main clause first. They then wrote sentences with the subordinating clause at the beginning and constructed their own. We have enjoyed reading The Ice Trap and learning more about Ernest Shackleton’s journey. Using different verbs from the text, children enjoyed writing sentences and improving them each time.

Geography
We have come to the end of our unit by learning about the human impact on climate change. Children learned what climate change is, how the animals and plants are being impacted and how humans are affecting the environment. This then led to a good discussion about what we can do in our environments to help our climate, and we talked about things we could do every day to help the Earth. These included: switching off the lights when not in use, not leaving electric items on charge for longer than needed, and walking where possible rather than using a car! Children created beautiful, informative posters about what we can do to help.

RE
We have come to the end of our unit, all about Christianity. During this unit, children learned more about the pathway of a ‘Good life’ through Christianity. Children enjoyed learning more about the significance of the Bible, the different testaments, parables, and messages behind them. This week, we focused on Jesus’ teachings on how to live a good life and talked through a range of scenarios. Children acted out different scenarios in two ways. The first enacting without considering Jesus’ teachings, and the second giving thought to Jesus and his examples. At the end of RE lessons, children drew on the main question of how Christians lead good lives, reflecting on what this looks like. Children reflected on what it means for them personally to live a good life and what they could do each day to make it better. Each unit in RE focuses on a new pathway and helps children learn more about what this means through different faiths.

Science
We finished our Amazing Bodies unit this week by exploring the muscles in our bodies! We put them to the test by having a go at a range of exercises to work a specific muscle, including biceps, triceps, quadriceps and abdominals! We discussed which area of the body they could feel when doing the different exercises then labelled each muscle on a diagram of the body.

Extreme Reading
3BK – 62%
3B – 75%

Homework
There is no specific homework set for the Easter holidays, however, it would be great if children could read every day and continue using TT Rockstars, Mathletics and Spelling Shed while at home to retain their learning from this term!

This week, Mrs Barker completed her last week before going on maternity leave! We wish her all the best and hope she has a lovely maternity. Mrs Whale will be the class teacher in 3BK on Mondays through to Wednesdays each week until the end of the summer term.

Have a wonderful break, and we will see you all in the Summer term!
