Year 1 News – 13.3.26
English
We have continued our topic on the body. The children have started writing a non-fiction booklet about the five senses. Did you know that you have three bones in your ear and that one of them is called a hammer?

Phonics
This week we have learnt about silent letters, including gn – gnome, kn – knight, wr – wrist and mb – lamb. Over the next two weeks, we will be doing a practise phonics screening check with all the children. Please keep practising all the phonemes at home.
Maths
We have finished our Addition and Subtraction unit of work. This week, we have looked at finding the difference, related facts and missing number problems.
Science
Our science lesson focused on the sense of smell this week. The children smelled blue cheese, toothpaste, lemon, soap, garlic, and vinegar and then ticked if they liked the smell or not. Surprisingly, some children seemed to like the overwhelming garlic smell. We then did a tally to find out what each hive’s favourite smell was. Toothpaste seemed to be very popular!

Special Visitor
This week, Ivan’s dad came to talk to us about his job as a paramedic. The children were very interested and asked lots of questions.

Computing
We continued with our unit on coding in computing. The children used code blocks on Purple Mash to make bubbles move and pop. They all have a Purple Mash password in their reading records, so they can do more coding at home.

Art
In art this week, the children worked very hard creating cards to celebrate Mother’s Day. The children were very excited while making them and were proud of their finished cards. They will be bringing them home today! We hope you all have a lovely Mother’s Day and that you like your beautiful homemade cards.

PE
This half term, we are doing gymnastics in our Thursday PE lessons. This week we focused on balancing.

Mystery Reader
Thank you to this week’s Mystery Reader.

Homework
The children have all brought home their Learning Log. See below for this week’s task.
Please keep hearing your child read regularly. The expectation is that they read four times each week at home. Please write comments in their reading record.
Well done to everyone who earned a Mathletics or Fast Phonics certificate this week. We have our first gold Mathletics certificate in Year 1. Amazing!!
Have a lovely weekend.
