Year 1 News – 15.5.26

English

In English, we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and acted out the story. The children then planned and started writing a retelling with their own characters. It looks like we’re going to get some very interesting and fun stories.

We also went to visit our school goats. We didn’t see a troll, but we did see a rat!

Phonics and Reading

We are still revising all the phonemes. The phonics screening check will take place the week beginning the 8th June. We are doing lots of phonics work in school, but some children are still not that confident with all the phonemes. Please keep hearing your child read regularly at home. Your support really helps and makes a difference.

Maths

We have continued with our multiplication and division unit. This week, we learnt about making and adding equal groups and arrays.

Design Technology

We got a letter from the Three Billy Goats Gruff asking the children to build them a new bridge, as the troll kept breaking theirs. The children worked in groups to build bridges and troll traps out of different materials. We were impressed with how well they communicated and worked together.

We then tested the bridges by seeing how many goats the bridge could hold and if the troll trap worked. Finally, we evaluated the bridges in our books.

Geography

In geography, we learnt about the four capital cities of the United Kingdom. All children were very confident in knowing that London is the capital city of England.

Run, run as fast as you can!

Our missing gingerbread men are now in Europe! They have been to France, Germany, Spain and Holland What an exciting adventure!!

Chrysalis Cam!

Our caterpillars have made their cocoons. Hopefully, they will transform into butterflies next week.

Have a great weekend.
