A wet and windy week!

Maths
This week, children used their understanding of perimeter to add the lengths of the different sides of a closed shape, allowing them to use their previous skills with the column method to add numbers. We have now started our unit on fractions. Children identified unit and non-unit fractions. We ended the week by looking at different wholes and gained a better understanding that a fraction must have equal parts.

English
Year 3 has enjoyed learning more about the explorer Ernest Shackleton. We began the week discussing what children would take with them if they were on board the Endurance with reason. They came up with lots of interesting ideas, including maps, lanterns, flashlights, teddy bears, photo frames, food, water and clothes! After discussing and choosing 9, children had to arrange them in a diamond 9, rank their choices, and give reasons for some of their choices. We then read a short telegram before writing our own, using synonyms for ‘scared’ and ‘excited,’ to send a short message back to our loved ones. We ended the week learning more about different vocabulary and whether they would be the right vocabulary to describe Antarctica, and put them into the zone of relevance.

Geography
Our unit focuses on different climates, and children enjoyed reviewing their understanding of a climate and naming a few using their maps, which they colour-coded last week. This week, children were given the task to create beautiful double-page spreads about different climates. This had to include information about the climate’s name and location, typical weather, animals and plant life, and a picture!

Science
What do we eat, and how does this impact us? We enjoyed spending an afternoon learning more about the Eating Well Guide. Children referred to this when creating their own day of different meals, which had to include key parts: fats, carbohydrates, and fruit and vegetables. This gave children a good opportunity to discuss their thoughts in groups and reflect on their own diets.
