Year 1 – 23.05.25
Phonics
In phonics we have revised the phonemes/ graphemes air, ear, ure, aw/ au/ or and oi/oy. We have also looked at reading and writing compound words. We have continued to practise reading and spelling all of the Year 1 tricky words.
The Year 1 Phonic Screening Check is due to take place week commencing Monday 9th June. Your child has been sent home with a leaflet containing more information. They also have some phonics sheet to work through during the half term. Please ensure your child reads the words correctly and does not add or miss any sounds.
The leaflet is also attached here.
English
In English we have continued writing our own version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children did a fantastic job! They sequenced their stories well, included lots of brilliant vocabulary and tried hard with their punctuation and handwriting.
Maths
In maths this week we started our new topic on fractions. We spent the week looking at halves. We learnt that two halves make a whole and worked hard to find half of an object, shape and quantity.

Science
In science we investigated the enquiry question ‘What is happening underground beneath our plants?’. We looked at the roots of our runner bean plants, a beetroot and a carrot. We discussed the function of roots and how the roots of different plants can all be very different.

Geography
In geography we looked at the four compass points north, east, south and west. The children labelled the points of a compass and used compass points to give and follow directions.
Computing
In computing we continued with our work on animated stories. This week we added a background.

PSHE
In PSHE we continued to look at feelings. The children are all very good at naming and identifying a variety of different feelings. This week we enjoyed the story ‘The Colour Monster’ and thought about things that can make us feel happy, sad, angry and calm.
Music
We have been busy practising this half term’s song ‘Let’s Brush Our Teeth’. We hope you enjoy our final performances!
Rodley Nature Reserve
Next half term Year 1 will be enjoying a trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. Your child will come home today with a letter containing more information.
It is also attached here:
Homework
There has been no red or purple homework book sent home today. Your child has been sent home with lists of real and alien words to practise in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check that is due to take place week commencing Monday 9th June. Please take time to complete this activity with your child. Encourage them to add sound buttons to the words and read exactly what is written, avoiding adding or missing sounds out.
We hope you have a lovely half term,
The Year 1 Team
