5KH residential Day 2 evening
In the evening, after some recreation time, half the children visited the church graveyard and viaduct (no photos), whilst the other half did the night walk.

The night walk session begins with a map reading lesson: orientation, contours, symbols and six-figure coordinates. The children did well with this and Zach excelled – knowing that a dotted green line with diamonds on is a national path and spotting that one runs through Gearstones’ garden. I wonder what his mother does for a living?
The children did some of the navigation on the night walk themselves. We found caves, shake holes, a medieval lime kiln, dried up streams, an abandoned settlement, a warren, interesting geology, a skull and lots of wool. Miraculously we also found a torch and an earring (!) that had been lost the night before!
