Year 6 30.1.26

History

We are nearing the end of our topic on WW1 and we have really enjoyed learning about this period of history. This week, Year 6 learned about the infamous Battle of the Somme. We discussed why it was such a disaster and drew comic strips to show our understanding. Have a look at some of our work here:

English – The Arrival

Children this week have continued their amazing narratives based around our class text: The Arrival. This week we have focused on building tension and breaking our character’s heart (before she finds her rage and escapes from her prison next week.) We have been really impressed by lots of the writing produced. Have a look at some snippets here:

Maths

Algebra

We have had a fantastic week in Maths exploring Algebra! While the word “Algebra” can sometimes sound daunting, the children have approached it with incredible enthusiasm and logic.

Using the White Rose Maths booklets, we started by looking at patterns and rules using 2-step function machines. This helped the class visualize inputs and outputs before we moved on to using letters to represent numbers. The children have been brilliant at forming expressions and understanding substitution (swapping a letter for a specific number).

By the end of the week, we progressed to looking at formulae and forming equations to solve problems. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they realized that algebra is just like solving a puzzle.

If you want to test them at home, ask them: “If £a = £5, what is the value of £2a + £1? “ Can they write us a problem to solve in the comments at the bottom?
