Year 4: Worm Hunters

Despite coming ever closer to the end of the year, the children of Year 4 have been hard at work and have definitely earned the upcoming break!

Maths

In maths, we have been finishing our work on decimals by exploring how to round decimals to the nearest whole number. After spending some time revisiting the rules for rounding, we then transferred this knowledge on to rounding decimals. The children worked really hard to develop their understanding and despite some children initially finding the work tricky, they showed great resilience and persevered throughout the lessons.

Science

In our science lessons this week, both classes have been putting their knowledge of invertebrates to use. We began by setting up an investigation into where on the school grounds we would find the most worms. The children were split into six groups and each given a section of the school grounds to investigate. Though the very dry ground tried its best to thwart their efforts, the children came up with some clever solutions and were able to keep clear tallies of the worms they had found. Once this was done, the children then used their findings to create a new investigation. Some chose to continue focusing on worms, while others broadened their focus to include different invertebrates. It was really lovely to see the teamwork that each group displayed throughout each of these practical investigations!

General News

There has been no homework set this week due to it being a holiday, however the children would definitely benefit from using the range of online resources that we have to develop their reading, maths and spelling skills. We would reccomend particularly focusing on practising any times tables that the children are not yet familiar with, as this will help develop the children’s overall maths skills and help prepare them for the upcoming times table check.

We hope you all have a wonderful half-term holiday!
