Year 3 – Hot Days and Harlow Carr!

What a scorcher! It’s been hot and sunny all week, and while the sunshine has definitely lifted everyone’s spirits, it has also been important to stay sun-safe. We’ve made the most of the weather by taking some of our learning outside when possible – 3CW enjoyed reading their science books in the shade on Thursday, and PE lessons were mostly outside, with some breaks in the shade and indoors. Meanwhile, 3B had a wonderful day exploring the beautiful Harlow Carr Gardens in glorious sunshine!

English

This week in English, we’ve been focusing on improving our grammar and creative writing skills, starting with how to use possessive apostrophes correctly. We then moved on to descriptive writing, learning how to make our sentences more vivid by using powerful verbs and noun phrases. By the end of the week, the children wrote brilliant descriptions of a volcanic eruption, starting with the dramatic line: “In one terrible, endless moment…”

Maths

In maths, 3CW continued our measuring unit, with a focus on mass and capacity. We’ve been comparing and calculating weight, and learning to measure and convert between litres and millilitres.

Science

In science, we delved into the requirements of plants for life and growth. We revisited what plants need and discovered that not all plants want or need the same things – especially the tough cacti! We used videos and information sheets to compare different plants’ needs, and talked about why one-size-doesn’t-fit-all when it comes to survival in the plant world.

History

We started our new topic: The Romans! We explored timelines, discovered why Caesar failed in his invasion attempts, and how Claudius finally succeeded. Children used atlases to identify modern-day countries that were once part of the Roman Empire – a great way to see just how far Roman rule stretched. We ended by discussing why Britain, with all its damp weather and distant location, was worth the bother for the Romans!

Pictures

We have had a bit of a camera shortage around KS2 recently, and some issues with photos not uploading properly, but we have a few lovely photos of our PE session and some of 3B’s trip to Harlow Carr.
