Year 1 News – 9.1.26

Happy New Year! It has been a cold week but we’ve had a great week filled with lots of learning.

English

This week we enjoyed the story ‘The Girl and the Dinosaur’ by Hollie Hughes.

The children then each chose a dinosaur to write a description about. They worked hard to include adjectives and the conjunction ‘and’ in their writing.

Phonics

We have continued to revise all the phonemes we have learnt so far. The children are becoming a lot more confident reading and writing all the phonemes. Phonics Play is a great free website and has some fun games. Dragons Den is good for reading real and nonsense words.

Maths

We have been writing number names to twenty and doing some tricky problem-solving. A lot of the children found this question challenging.

Science

We have started our unit on materials. We learnt that a material is what an object is made of. We sorted various objects into groups based on what material they were made of. These groups included wood, plastic, metal, glass, fabric and brick. Can your child spot any materials at home?

We also looked at the word ‘waterproof’ and what it means. We then tested a variety of materials to see if they were waterproof or not and recorded our findings on a table.

PPA Rotation

We have started a new PPA rotation every Friday afternoon. This half term, the children will be making homemade baked beans in DT, creating a collage in the style of Matisse in art and creating paper plate art based on the story ‘The Dot’.

In RE, we will be learning about celebrations. Please could you email in a photograph of your child at a celebration to support this topic. This could be of them at a wedding, Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Easter, birthday or any other occasion. These photos can be emailed to alexandra.galbraith@farsleyfarfield.org.uk, vicki.connolly@farsleyfarfield.org.uk or jessica.hardwick@farsleyfarfield.org.uk

Art Workshop

We have created ‘Art Workshops’ in our classrooms. The children are enjoying using different media and have created some lovely pieces of art.

Homework

Please hear your child read and write a comment in their record book. The children have all brought home their purple homework book.

Have a great weekend.
