Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 25.04.25

We have had a fantastic first few days of the new term. The children have came back to school ready to learn and we’ve had fun starting some new, exciting topics.

Phonics

We have started to revise and practise all of the phonemes / graphemes we have learnt this year again. This week we have looked at the digraphs ck, ff, ll, ng, ss, zz, ph, wh, ch, sh and th. We have also practised reading and spelling the tricky words there and called.

English and Science

We started the week by enjoying the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We used the reading dogs to help us to answer questions about the story.

We later received a letter from Jack. He had left us some magic beans and asked us to plant them. We all planted our very own magic bean.

We learnt that all plants start from a seed, bean or bulb. They need soil, water and sunlight to help them grow into a healthy plant. The plant then grows more seeds and beans and the cycle begins again. We spent time looking at and creating our own life cycle of a bean. We also planted a class beanstalk that we will measure over the half term.

In our English lessons, we discussed what might be at the top of our magical beanstalk and worked hard to write some fantastic descriptive sentences containing lots of adjectives.

Maths

In maths we have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Can your child count confidently forwards and backwards in multiples of 2, 5 and 10? We have enjoyed listening to these songs to help us to practise. Please keep practising counting at home.

Geography

In geography we have started our new topic on the world. We learnt that the world is split into seven continents and that a continent is a collection of countries. We have spent time naming and locating the continents on a world map.

We have also really enjoyed listening to this song!

PE

In our Thursday PE lesson we enjoyed a striking and fielding session with a Leeds Rhinos sports coach. We will continue to enjoy these sessions for the rest of the half term.

Newsletter

Here is our Summer newsletter. A paper copy has been sent home with your child today.

Have a lovely weekend,
