Farsley Farfield Primary School

Welcome to Year 3!

It’s been a busy first week back, and we have been very impressed with the attitude of our new Year 3s!

Our first day was spent discussing our school rules, hives and sharing expectations. Children loved sharing what they got up to during their holidays and taking a short tour of their new building, which included the cloakroom, toilets and our school library.

We discussed what a great learner looks like, and after sharing what this might include, children made their learner promises, which they will be able to reflect on throughout the year. Our afternoon was spent on some fun art activities related to our classes on robins and kingfishers, a game of bingo, and ended with a fun play on the fields!

Maths

We have started our first maths unit, which is on place value. This unit involves small steps to break down key points, and we have been busy working in pairs and independently representing and partitioning numbers up to 100. Next week, we will move on to partitioning numbers up to 1000. Children used maths apparatus to make different numbers and shared their understanding with their partners.

The yellow pencil danced happily!

In English, we began the week by learning about different word classes, including adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs. Children shared examples and enjoyed using different coloured strips to write down examples of each, which they then used to write their very own silly sentences!

Here are a few examples

‘The silly tooth fairy was singing loudly!’

‘The blinding sun was jumping happily.’

‘The scared turtle was tripping quickly.’

We ended the week by planning a diary entry of their week using notes and pictures, and the children went on to write a short entry that highlighted their favourite parts, which included feeding and chasing the chickens and climbing the treehouse!

R.E

In RE, our first unit focuses on Judaism through the introduction of a new RE syllabus, drawing more deeply on questions. Year 3 enjoyed learning more about Noah’s Ark and the significance of a covenant. We discussed how a promise affects our emotions and how Jewish people recall God’s covenant through the story of Noah’s Ark. Children created beautiful symbols to represent the promise made and wrote down promises that they would try to keep, which also allowed us to reflect on the learner promises made earlier in the week.

PSHE

In PSHE this week, we did our first MindMate lesson of the year based around the topic of ‘Feeling good and being me’. The lesson focussed on goals and aspirations, which seems fitting for the start of a new school year! The children thought of their own strengths and things they are good at, as well as things they find challenging. It was so lovely to hear the children speak so positively about themselves and their skills! The children then thought about their goals and how they would be able to achieve them. Hopefully they can use this positive mindset throughout Year 3!

Well done to our special mentions this week – Ava, Lewis, Harris and Tilly!

Reminders

All children should have a pair of indoor and outdoor shoes.

Reading records have been sent home this week, along with a coloured book band. Children are expected to read five times a week and bring in their signed reading record, which must be signed by an adult, each day.

Earlier this week, we sent out envelopes containing forms for parents to complete and return. Please ensure that this is completed and brought in.

Homework will be set from next week and must be returned by the following Wednesday of each week. No homework has been set this week, as it is the children’s first week back, and they may need to recharge before a whole week of learning!

Any new medication that children need to take must be taken to the front office, and a form must be completed for it to be administered.

Have a lovely weekend.
