Farsley Farfield Primary School

Welcome back

Maths
We are continuing to learn about addition and subtraction, and this week our focus has been on adding and subtracting numbers with no exchange using the formal method. Children created different values using place-value grids and then moved on to represent their answers using the formal method. Next week, we will move on to adding numbers greater than 10 (involving exchange).

Why not treat yourself to a visit to the circus?
We’ve been at the circus! We began our writing lessons this week by listening to circus-themed music, and the children wrote down what they could see, hear, feel, smell, and touch.  They then extended their ideas to include expanded noun phrases and alliteration. This includes sentences about wonderfully talented acrobats walking on a tight rope, to funny, colourful clowns taking over the stage while the audience ate sweet, sticky candyfloss! We then moved on to looking at different adverts, identifying key features of an advert and highlighting persuasive language. Children then ended the week by writing their own advert about a circus, inviting others to attend, which included rhetorical questions and persuasive language!

Guided Reading
Our new class text has got the children excited, and the cover makes it easy to see why! Children made predictions about the text based on the cover and blurb and learned more about Leon and his visit to the circus. So far, we’ve learned about some of the amazing acrobats and their performances. Leon loves magic, and we wonder what he’ll get up to, especially since he believes in magic.

Map work
It was all map work in our Geography lesson this week. Children reviewed the seven continents, learned more about the location of the equator and the tropics, and then labelled them on a world map. We shared our knowledge of different countries within Europe, and children worked in pairs and independently to locate different countries and cities. Here’s the continent song for you to listen to!

Les Saisons
Our unit in French this term is all about the different seasons, and we loved having a go at pronouncing them as well as identifying key events and clothing we might wear throughout. Each week, we will focus on a different season and learn how to talk about the weather and what we might do.

School council
Year 3 loved listening to the school council presentations this week and taking part in a class vote. All the children who took part worked so hard, and we are super proud of their effort and courage to share their ideas in front of their classes. Well done to Dee Dee & Eira!
