Week 3

Maths

This week, Year 3 have been learning about time. We began the week recognising Roman numerals and identifying numbers on an analogue clock. Children then moved on to making the time in 5-minute intervals using the terms ‘past’ and ‘to’. This was challenging for classes, and we continued to work with our clocks, focusing more on the time ‘to the next hour’. We ended the week by looking at digital clocks, and most children could name an item at home which showed the time in this way. Children have also been practising their times tables and we have set a battle on TT Rockstar!

English

Year 3 enjoyed using their Chromebooks to research domestic and street cats this week. They will use the information next week to write a detailed non-chronological report comparing the two types of cats. This week, we have sent home a poem, ‘The Sound Collector’, for children to practise reading through – we will be performing this in a few weeks!

The Sound Collector – by Roger McGough
A stranger called this morning
Dressed all in black and grey
Put every sound into a bag
And carried it away
The whistling of the kettle
The turning of the lock
The purring of the kitten
The ticking of the clock
The popping of the toaster
The crunching of the flakes
When you spread the marmalade
The scraping noise it makes
The hissing of the frying pan
The ticking of the grill
The bubbling of the bathtub
As it starts to fill
The drumming of the raindrops
On the window pane
When you do the washing up
The gurgle of the drain
The crying of the baby
The squeaking of the chair
The swishing of the curtain
The creaking of the stair
A stranger called this morning
He didn’t leave his name
Left us only silence
Life will never be the same

Science

This week, Year 3 enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a flowering plant and pollination. The children created a diagram with scientific terms and pictures to show the cycle. They then enjoyed working in groups to act out the life of a flower. We had lots of busy bees in class who loved flying across to different flowers, even if they were covered with nectar! We then ended the lesson with children having a go at creating short poems and songs, sharing some of the process.

PE

In our athletics session, we enjoyed practising some sports day events!

In our striking and fielding choice, we’ve been working on accurate kicking and throwing. Children enjoyed playing dynamics and carrying out different movements, increasing the distance between them each time. They then practised throwing in groups with the distance increasing each time. Children loved becoming gate keepers to practise throwing accurately.

Well done to our special mentions – Tilli, Leo, Ayaat, Joseph & Alisha!

Class dojo – Dylan & Hannah!
