Poems and puppets!
Maths
We’ve had a busy week with numbers! Children looked at inverse operations, reading through word problems and using their understanding to answer a range of word problems involving both addition and subtraction, to find missing calculations and totals, and to compare different values. We then moved on to a new unit on Multiplication and Division, looking at equal groups. Children will need to practise their 3s, 4s and 8s and can use TT Rockstar to support their recall – this will be really helpful for this unit!
Poems
This week, Year 3 have enjoyed listening to and practising the poem ‘The Adventures of Isabel’. They have been using tone and expression and will be performing this next week! Along with this, we have also been listening to and sharing our ideas on the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’ Children shared key points and their favourite lines from the poem.
Below are both of our poems.
Poem
The Adventures of Isabel – Ogden Nash
Isabel met an enormous bear,
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t care,
The bear was hungry, the bear was ravenous,
The bear’s big mouth was cruel and cavernous.
The bear said, Isabel, glad to meet you,
How do, Isabel, now I’ll eat you!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She washed her hands and she straightened her hair up,
Then Isabel quietly ate the bear up.
Once in a night as black as pitch
Isabel met a wicked old witch.
The witch’s face was cross and wrinkled,
The witch’s gums with teeth were sprinkled.
Ho, ho, Isabel! the old witch crowed,
I’ll turn you into an ugly toad!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry,
She showed no rage and she showed no rancor,
But she turned the witch into milk and drank her
Science and shadows
We had lots of fun learning about shadows and the difference between opaque, translucent and transparent. Children enjoyed using different objects that were either opaque, translucent, or transparent, then using them with a torch. They used this from various angles to change the shape of the shadow and noted down whether the object created a shadow, followed by a short discussion on why.
DT
Year 3 had lots of fun this week, spending a morning following a design, and creating a final puppet with a motion as part of a puppet show! Using the theme of magic, children added a variety of pictures, including magical hands, bunches of flowers, and fluttering doves, to tell stories in groups. It was magical!

Visit to the theatre
As part of our writing unit after the winter break, we will be visiting the Alhambra Theatre to watch Snow White. We have sent home a letter with the children. Adults will need to go to Parent Pay to make a payment toward the visit, and the visit permission is recorded there.
We would love for some parent volunteers to support us with this visit. If you can help us, please email us or speak to us at the beginning or end of the day. Depending on the number of people who can support us, names will be chosen at random. We look forward to hearing from you!
Have a lovely weekend.
