Perimeter, Diaries and Saxons, Oh My!

In our English and Guided Reading sessions, we have been reading a brand new text called ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. Over the next few weeks, both classes are going to be exploring the story in more detail and using it to create some diary entries for the characters, beginning with the character of Ahmet. To this end, we spent a lesson exploring the features of diaries, which the children were very good at!

In Maths, we have been continuing to develop our work an perimeter. This week, we have primarily been focusing on finding the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and regular polygons. Though both of these seemed quite tricky at first, the children did a great job of breaking the steps down and applying strategies to solve different problems.

This afternoon, both classes spent some time exploring the archaeological dig in Sutton Hoo to try to solve the mystery of who the grave might have belonged to. We looked at a range of artefacts that were recovered (including the famous Sutton Hoo helmet) to try and determine what it could tell us about their owner. We determined that they were likely wealthy and important because of how many of the objects were gold, silver and/or jewelled and that they must have been a fierce warrior because of the helmet and weapons that were recovered.

Next Thursday (March 5th), we are going to be celebrating World Book Day. This year’s theme is ‘Go All In’ and is all about reading things that interest you. Because of this, there are two options available for those children that would like to dress up. While children can still come dressed as a character from a book, they can also come dressed in a way that reflects their interests or hobbies. And, as always, there is no expectation for children to dress up at all if they don’t want to!

We would also like to remind you about the book swap that will be taking place on World Book Day. The children will be able to exchange a book that they already have and perhaps don’t want to read again or have grown out of for a new one to explore! For this event to be successful, children are invited to bring in one or two books that they no longer want to donate to the book to swap. Please bring in any books by Wednesday, so that we can have the books set up ready for the children on Thursday. We understand that not everyone will have an unwanted book to donate at this time, and that is not a problem at all. All children will still be able to choose a new book to take home.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
