One week to go!

Maths

This week, Year 3 have moved on to a new unit on statistics. We began the week by working through tally charts and making comparisons. Children are already familiar with bar charts from our science and computing lessons, and they have enjoyed interpreting the data before moving on to create their own using a table of information. 3B ended the week by examining pictograms and using the data to create a bar chart. Children began by adding bar charts, then made their own, and added the x and y axes, as well as a title. Maths homework this week is recapping charts through a Sports Day activity.

English

Year 3 have enjoyed reading through and learning more about Kenning poems this week. They created mind maps of ideas for their kenning on different animals. They then wrote poems about different animals, holidays and birthday parties!

Our guided reading sessions have been very exciting after learning more about Sally Bones and Varjak and meeting them in person! Children discussed the language the author used to set the scene, especially when he made his way back home with Tam in tow and enjoyed discussing why the sky was thundery and dark. Varjak has made his way back over the hill with his new friend, Cludge! Will he save his family?

Discovery Centre

As part of the history unit, Year 3 took a trip to the Discovery Centre. They participated in a brief workshop, where they gained more insight into the life of another female warrior, known as Cartimandua! After learning more about her and her relationship with Boudicca, they enjoyed comparing the two queens and shared who their favourite leader was and why. Children were part of a carousel and looked at real coins from Roman times, and went on to design their own with their face and a symbol they felt represented them. They also examined parts of pottery and used their inference skills to determine the use and material used. We ended the visit with a tour of the brilliant workshop, which houses over a million artefacts! This included bandages from a mummy and animals.

Computing

3B finally completed their mission to space and rescued the rest of the team as part of their simulation unit. Children worked collaboratively, sharing ideas and exploring different possibilities. They ended the session by reflecting on the importance of simulators and the different scenarios in which they think it would be helpful.
3B have also started a new unit on Graphing. Children loved asking their friends about their favourite colours and collected this information using a tally. After checking the data, they then created a bar chart and made comparisons.
