Once upon a time…
We have had another super week in Year 3! The children have loved writing the beginning of their alternative fairytales and were fascinated by magnets in science!
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning how to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number. The children used practical resources to help them understand how to multiply the numbers and used their place value knowledge to partition the two-digit numbers into tens and ones so they could multiply each part by the single digit. The children first learnt how to do do this without needing to make exchanges, then moved onto multiplying with an exchange. For example, ten ones can be exchanged for one ten. Have a look at the video to recap multiplying 2-digits by 1-digit with an exchange. This may be helpful for this week’s homework!
English
After weeks of reading different fairytales, generating ideas and developing their descriptive language, the children have started to write their own alternative fairytales. The children are writing their own version of Jack and the Beanstalk, and many children have turned Jack into a very rude, unkind little boy! The children began with their introduction to the ‘true story’ of Jack and the Beanstalk, taking inspiration from ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’, writing in first person as if they were the giant. They then moved onto their opening, where they introduced Jack by describing his personality and appearance with ambitious adjectives, and describing where he lived. The children have loved writing their own stories and we can’t wait to read the rest of them next week!
Science
In Science this week, the children worked in groups to answer some questions about magnets. Each group was given a different question, including:
•Are bigger magnets stronger?
•Can a metal object become a magnet itself?
•Is the magnetic force the same all over a magnet?
•Can a magnet attract a magnetic object through water?
•Can a magnet attract a magnetic object through a non-magnetic object?
The children worked cooperatively in their groups to investigate their question, using magnets and other equipment to help them find the answer! They did a great job of thinking scientifically and lots of children came up with more interesting questions based on the answers they had found!
History
This week was all about the Pharaoh. Children enjoyed taking part in lots of group talk about the civilisation and a dynasty. They then shared their thoughts on who a Pharaoh might be and the role that they had in Ancient Egypt. After reading a short extract of a possible day in the life of a Pharoah they were shocked to discover how much power they had and what they could do for others. This included leading military armies and having influence over land. We ended the lesson reflecting on the impact that the Pharoah had on Ancient Egypt.
