Cycles of Learning

This week, the children in both classes have been focusing on learning a poem for the first poetry slam of Year 4. Our poem is a lovely one by John Lyons titled ‘Granny’s Sugarcake’. We had a lot of fun exploring the meaning and story of the poem – especially as the way that it is written really evokes the poet’s accent. We would love for the children to practise their lines for the poem over the weekend to help learn them off by heart. Also, keep your eye on the blog for next week as we will hopefully have some videos of the performance to share with you.

In our Science lessons, we have been hard at work exploring the different stages of the water cycle. After spending some time discussing these stages and what happens during them using correct scientific terminology, the children were able to label their own diagrams of this process – giving clear explanations for each step in the cycle.

In Maths, we have reached the end of the first unit of multiplication and division and have also completed the end of block assessment. Though we will be continuing to work with multiplication and division in our next unit of work, this time we will be less focused on specific times tables, and instead focusing more on how we can apply different methods to multiply or divide a range of numbers. The children will however, also continue working on their times tables in specific sessions outside of maths lessons.

In the coming weeks, we will be planning and preparing for a DT project in which the children create their own electronic games. School will provide the vast majority of the materials, however we would really appreciate it if the children could bring in a cardboard box to hold their game together. A shoe box would be ideal, but any similarly sized cardboard box will do. Many thanks in advance!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
