A busy week

Maths
It’s been a busy week in maths! The children started the week quite confident in adding and subtracting 100s and spotting patterns in calculations. We ended the week by adding 1s across a 10. Children used maths resources to exchange and then looked at ways to break down the single digit that is being added into two parts: the value that needed to be added to get the next ten, and the remaining. Children used the part-whole model to work out the two different values.

English
We’ve been reading a new story this week, ‘The First Drawing’. This was all about a young boy who saw lots of different pictures whilst looking at clouds, hunting, in the sea and in the cave. He couldn’t figure out why his grown-ups and others around him couldn’t see what he could see, until he decided to draw a picture on a cave wall to share!  After listening to the story, we spent some of our lessons this week adding to speech bubbles, sharing what might have been said. We ended the week learning about expanded noun phrases and used our understanding to describe a mammoth and its features.

Science
We loved learning about fossils last week, and Year 3 were lucky enough to see real fossils! Children recapped the different stages of how a fossil is made, sharing their understanding in pairs and small groups before moving on to the write-up with a picture to match.

Wear a seatbelt!
On Wednesday, Year 3 had a lesson on road safety delivered by Road Safety trainers. It began with a catapult and a small ball, and children had to predict what would happen when it was released. As expected, the ball went quite far. They then discussed ways to prevent this from happening, and with some measures in place when rereleased, the ball remained in the same place. This then moved on to using a smaller car to scale with dummies inside. A ramp was used to demonstrate the impact on dummies when they rolled down the ramp without a seatbelt. Children took a close look inside and then shared the injuries they thought the dummies might have after this ‘accident’. They then watched this happen again, but this time with a seatbelt. We ended the session by sharing the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

History
This week, we have been learning about the Iron Age and have started to draw comparisons between the different eras and how things changed. Children made inferences about a picture based on the Iron Age, noting what they could see, what it might mean, and what they couldn’t work out. They also learned about the excavation at Danebury Hill and discussed what the findings show. At the end of this lesson, children were asked which period they preferred, and several said the Mesolithic period, because they were good at building fires and using bows and arrows – a personal experience from our Stone Age Day!

French
Our unit this term is an introduction to French. Year 3 have been working on salutations, how to ask how someone is and a response, as well as numbers up to 10 and colours! Here are some short conversations in 3BK.
