Year 2 News

We hope that everyone had a fantastic Easter break! Can you believe we are already in the summer term! We have all been enjoying the sunshine this week.

English

In English we have been reading the story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We looked at the way the story has an opening, build up, problem, resolution and ending, and we used a story mountain to sequence the pictures and retell the story. After investigating the character of the tiger, we went on to plan our own story, using different characters and meals but using similar events. We have planned these on a story mountain and are ready to start writing our own stories next week.

Spelling

We have been looking at words ending in le and el this week. Don’t forget to hand in your spelling homework on Monday!

Maths

This week, we have started work on fractions, looking first at equal groups and then at recognising and finding halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.

We started by making equal groups:

Mystery Reader

We were very lucky to have another mystery reader in 2MW this week. Thank you very much to Alice’s mum who shared The Cat in the Hat with us.

We launched Mystery Reader to celebrate World Book Day, intending to have the majority of visiting readers in March, however if you are still keen to visit us to share a book, please get in touch!

We have also seen a few children in school this week wearing their Blue Peter reading badges. If you still would like to enter, please click on the link. Bring in your Blue Peter badge to show!

History

Year 2 discovered items from a time capsule this week. We used our historical enquiry skills to consider what the objects could be and when they might be from. Children discussed the materials they were made from, talked about what items we have that are similar and tried to figure out how they might work. We decided that the items had come from the 1960s and learnt that this was within living memory, counting back in decades on a timeline to see how long ago it was.

Please check homework books this week. We have sent some homework for children to complete this week:
