Reception News – 27.2.26

Welcome back, we hope you had a super week. The children have started back well and had a super busy week.

Phonics

This half term in phonics we are revising all the phonemes we have learned so far. We will continue to learn new hard to read and spell words. This week our new words were ‘said‘, ‘so‘ and ‘have‘. Can you get your child to put that in a sentence? Can they spell it or recognise it in a storybook?

Maths

This week we have focused on mass. The children have compared ingredients and objects using the words heavier and lighter. They have explored balance scales and enjoyed creating some human balance scales too! Can they find objects at home to compare?

Our focus book

This half term our book is ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’. The children will be learning lots about growing, the seasons and exploring our outdoor environment. We will be sharing lots of information books and storybooks with the theme of growing.

Understanding of the World – RE

This week we have started our unit on special objects. We talked about objects that are special to us and that we should handle special objects with respect so they don’t get broken. The children found out that some objects look very special, but that others can be special to someone because of what they mean, where they come from, or how they make the person feel.

Shrove Tuesday

This week we celebrated ‘Shrove Tuesday’. We learnt that we celebrate ‘Pancake day’ because it was a way of Christians using up the ingredients before they gave them up for lent. The children used scales to measure out the ingredients and named the equipment used. They cooked their own pancake and chose their own topping. Both RKT and RPT ‘s favourite topping was syrup and sugar. We had a lot of fun tossing the pancakes and enjoying the book ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’.

PE

In PE we started our unit on running and jumping. The children did a great job navigating the hall without bumping into others, and they tried very hard to jump with both feet at the same time.

Secret Reader

Our secret reader has started now, the children are super excited to see who may come and read a story. If you would like to sign up we have lots of slots available – Monday to Friday for the whole of March and April. If you would like to sign up please email hannah.kumar@farsleyfarfield.org.uk for storytime in RKT or sabrina.pinnock@farsleyfarfield.org.uk for storytime in RPT. Once you are booked all you need to do is choose a storybook to read. We ask that you arrive at school for about 2.45pm.

Bedtime story event

Don’t forget our bedtime story evening is taking place next week – Wednesday 4th March 6-6.45pm. We will have 2 classrooms set up for you to visit and listen to different stories. We will be serving hot chocolate and biscuits too. Please do let us know if you are coming by sending in your reply slip.

Books to Swap

We have had some very generous donations for books to swap on World Book Day next Thursday and have enough for every child to get a new book. If you would like to still bring in a book to swap, please can you only bring one. Thank you very much.

Everything else…

Have a super weekend

The Reception team.
