English – The Christmas Truce

This week we have begun to learn about an incredible moment in history: the Christmas Truce. We watched a very special video and talked about the emotions that the soldiers might have felt during this extraordinary day. Using some incredible websites we looked at some real-life letters from soldiers and stole some highly unusual vocabulary: ‘the cold knocked the mud into a cocked hat’ and ‘hob-nobbing with the enemy.’ We have planned our letters and will write them next week. Here is the video and one of the websites we looked at if you’d like to read some letters for yourselves.

Maths – measures

This week we have started to look at measures for length, mass and capacity. We have been using our conversion chart to support us with our learning and using our skills of multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. Here is a short videos to support with this skill.

Science – Light

We have begun our new science unit on light this week and looked at the structure of the eye and how we see things. Did you know that the image we receive in our eye is upside down on our retina? The children also looked at the mind-bending phenomenon of refraction. Using a glass and some water, we used long, thin objects to see it for ourselves and then recorded our findings.
