English

Year 6 became roving reporters this week and wrote and performed scripts linked to our class text – Kensuke’s Kingdom. They did a great job imagining the television interviews which might have taken place due to the main character’s disappearance in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The children really had to understand the characters we have met so far and use this to create realistic dialogue.

Here are some examples

Geography

This week the children looked at a very strange map and began to learn about the tectonic plates that cover the Earth. We talked about a new geographical word: lithosphere and the layers of the Earth. Did you know scientists dug for over 25 years to create the Kola Superdeep Borehole and didn’t manage to break through the Earth’s crust?

What if we could dig through the Earth?

Maths

We have begun to work on the four operations with the children in Year 6. It would be incredibly helpful if you could support your child with their times tables knowledge – ask them to show you their TTRS heatmap and anything which isn’t green will show you the times tables facts they aren’t sure of.

Here is an NRICH addition challenge – if you’d like to bring in your solutions to your class teacher next week, you could win a prize!

General Reminders

Please can all children have indoor shoes starting next week?

If your child is bringing in a Stanley flask (or similar) for water, can they please be sent with a lid or a way of preventing leaks and spillages? They are too big for the desk, so they are being left on the floor, which is causing plenty of floods (particularly in 6D!).

Homework

Spelling Shed – Long vowel sound ‘igh’ spelled y x 3 games (at least)

TTRS – 10 minutes daily.

Mathletics x 2 assignments ‘Addition’

Extreme Reading x 5 per week.

Have a lovely weekend
