Ready, steady, paint!

Maths

This week, Year 3 have learned more about parallel and perpendicular lines, followed by a discussion of where and why they might be needed in real-life situations. Children used their understanding and identified more than one pair of lines and different pictures with reason. They ended the week by recognising 2D and 3D shapes. Next week, we will be moving on to a new unit, focusing on time. Maths homework this week is focusing more on different types of lines.

English

This week, both classes enjoyed writing from Varjak’s perspective and describing how he climbed up the wall, leading him to venture outside searching for a monster that could save his family. Children used a range of adverbs and verbs and short and long sentences to engage the reader.

The Roman Army

Year 3 have had a fun few days focusing on their DT project linked to our unit in history on the Romans. Children discussed the importance of protecting themselves in a battle, the reasons for this and the items they thought they would need. We also enjoyed putting them in order of importance! Children then looked at a range of shields and learned more about the key features of a Roman shield and why they were significant before moving on to designing some of their own.

Children first had to decide whether they wanted an auxiliary shield, which was typically oval-shaped, or a legionary shield, which was rectangular. Then they moved on to painting a base colour. Once it was dry, they added finer details and were so excited about using a glue gun. With the help of an adult, children glued on handles and bolsters. They ended the day by going out for a battle to check their sturdiness and then evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. We were so impressed!

Thank you to everyone for providing us with so much cardboard and pots!

PSHE

This term, our unit focuses on healthy eating and making changes we think might be suitable. Children had group discussions on when they might have a snack during the day, items they would eat, and why. After looking at the Eatwell guide, children wrote down some changes they might make to their diet.
