Farsley Farfield Primary School

Good evening,

Firstly, happy Eid to all those celebrating today.

The first week back has flown. We started by chatting about the holidays and memories of the residential (which seems an age ago). Then, straight on to Maths.

Maths

This week, we have been looking at coordinates and translating points and shapes. The most important facts to remember are that the x axis is the horizontal line and the y axis is the vertical line. Moving points is then a case of adding or subtracting from the correct axis. If your child need any help, please watch the video below

English

In English, we have started to look at persuasion techniques and persuasive texts. On Monday we looked at the types, such as adverts and debates. Then we focused on the features of that would be part of a letter, before attempting to persuade Mr Harris that there should be a no homework policy, amongst other things. We then used formal language to improve a letter written by the dwarves to Mr Bilbo Baggins when they were asking him to accompany them on their quest to regain their mountain.

Science

We have plenty of Science to cover in the next few weeks after a half term of Geography in preparation for the residential. We started this week by looking at and comparing the life cycles of mammals, birds, amphibians and insects. The children identified the stages each type goes through and drew diagrams showing them. We will soon be moving on to plant reproduction and start to germinate some seeds.

Author Visit

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of a visit by the author Jenny York. She gave a very entertaining talk and gave us a synopsis of one of her books, using some of the audience as the characters.

Finally, there are still a few items (boots, towels) that were unclaimed after the residential. If you are missing anything, please ask your child to look in the studio or email your child’s teacher.

Have a great weekend.

Mr Beevers, Mrs Kroon and the Year 5 team.
