Year 3 -Powerful writing and erupting volcanoes

English

This week we explored direct speech – using speech bubbles to demonstrate what people might have thought or said when mount Vesuvius erupted. We then learnt how to punctuate direct speech for our newspaper reports. We “popped” thought bubbles and turned them into quotes, carefully using inverted commas (speech marks), synonyms for ‘said’ and included the different people who might have been there. For example: “The explosion was so loud!” exclaimed one eye-witness.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we read the paper Disaster Strikes, focusing on retrieval skills and hunting for key information in the text. The children are learning to confidently answer questions and, by the end of the week, even wrote their own questions for a partner to solve.

Maths

3CW have spent one more week returning to fractions – specifically fractions of a set of objects. The children learnt to understand how many equal parts make up a whole and how that looks in a fraction. We also added and subtracted fractions and started to count how many objects in a fraction – for example: Find two-thirds of 12. 3B have started the unit on money and they have been working on converting pounds and pence.

Science

This week’s science was all about water transport in plants. We watched a fascinating video showing coloured water being drawn up through a plant’s stem, changing the colour of its petals. After lots of discussion, the children explained the process in writing and drew clear diagrams showing what happens.

History/DT

This week the children looked at a range of roman purses and wallets, discussed the key elements, and went on to design some roman purses ready for our DT project next week.

PE

This week, 3CW enjoyed a rotation of athletics activities in the sunshine. From javelin throwing and long jump to relay races, skipping, hurdles and ladder running – there was lots of energy, competition and sweaty smiles! Great teamwork and determination all round. 3B continued their OAA unit by building on their orienteering skills.
