Adverts, Decimals and Maps!
We have had anther busy week in Year 4 and as usual the children have been hard at work developing their learning.
Maths
In our Maths lessons, we have been exploring the idea of tenths and hundredths as decimals. It took a litle bit of time to get our heads around how we could transfer a fraction into a decimal, though we found that using a place value chart made it all much clearer! The main thing to remember is to check which columns in the chart each digit needed to be in. It was also sometimes helpful to use counters or base ten to help consolidate the understanding of what tenths and hundredths actually represent.
Geography
In Geography, we have been looking at how the city of Leeds has changed over the last 250 years. To this end, we looked at four different maps of Leeds, one from 1770, one from the 1890s, one from the 1950s and one from the present day. Each time we examined a new map, we traced over the key elements (roads, rivers buildings etc) in a different colour. This made it very clear how drastically the city had changed over the years. The children made some fantastic observations and some lovely maps!

English
In English, we have been working on creating our own radio adverts. After sorting the children into groups, they spent some time creating mind map plans about not only what information they wanted to include, but also what persuasive features they wanted to use to try and make their advert more effective. From here, the children worked together to script, rehearse and record their adverts and we have to say, they did a very good job! The children were clear, enthusiastic and very persuasive!
General News
This week, the children have been given both spelling and maths homework, which is due in on Wedneseday 14th May. As always, if the children struggle with any of the questions, they are always welcome to speak with a member of the Year 4 team who would be happy to help!
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
