Year 3: What a Week – From Roman Tribes to Harlow Carr

Although the sunshine has been a little more temperamental this week, we’ve still had plenty of fun and learning packed in! Both classes have continued to build on their skills across all subjects, with lots of creativity, debate, and new discoveries.

Trip to Harlow Carr
3CW have just returned from their trip to Harlow Carr, and we had a beautiful day for it. We enjoyed learning all about plants and pollinators, examining the plants and trees – including learning their scientific names, and even had the chance to plant our own lettuce. Of course, no trip would be complete without a bit of play – we had lots of fun exploring the ‘Logness Monster‘ and ‘Spider’s Nest’ playgrounds. What a lovely and educational trip!

English
In English, 3B finished off their vivid descriptions of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius – full of powerful imagery and emotion. 3CW spent time peer-assessing their descriptions and began looking at the features of newspaper articles in preparation for writing their own reports next half term.

Maths
3CW wrapped up their unit on capacity and mass this week. After half term, they’ll be moving back into the world of fractions – beginning with adding and subtracting them. Meanwhile, 3B have been working hard on understanding unit and non-unit fractions of sets of objects, laying solid groundwork for future learning.

History
In our Roman topic, we explored the structure of tribal communities and the roles people played within them. The children discussed and debated – as tribes – whether they would choose to fight or surrender if the Romans arrived. Some very convincing arguments on both sides!

Computing
3CW began learning how to use Google Slides, practising how to create and format text boxes for their presentations. 3B built on their skills by adding detail using shapes and lines – great progress all around!

French
In French, we have now learnt ten action words: nager, patiner, dessiner, danser, chanter, sauter, cuisiner, faire du vélo, and jouer d’un instrument. The key question was: Qu’est-ce que tu peux faire? – What can you do?

Music
We’ve continued practising “The Whole Wide World” this week, adding in glockenspiels to bring the song to life with some instrumental sparkle!

News
There is no special mention or dojo champion for 3CW this week due to our trip.
3B’s special mentions are: Jodh, Maddison, Leo, Harry.
3B’s class dojo champion: Hannah

3CW’s reading score: 74%
3B’s reading score: 78%

We hope you all have a restful, sunny half term – and we’ll see you back refreshed and ready for more exciting learning next week!
