Year 6 20/3/2026
We have had another busy week this week and the children have been working really hard.
Author Visit
To celebrate both World Book Day and World Down Syndrome Day, we were lucky enough to have a visit from the brilliant CBeebies presenter and author, George Webster.
George brought so much energy and smiles to the assembly, sharing his wonderful stories and chatting with the children about his life and work. His visit was the perfect way to tie our celebrations together; he’s such a fantastic role model for showing that being different is something to be proud of. The children were excited to meet him and loved hearing him read and his message of “different is amazing” really hit home with everyone.
Maths
In Year 6 this week, we have been diving deep into the world of area and perimeter! Following the White Rose Maths curriculum, the children have been sharpening their skills by moving beyond simply counting squares and into the world of compound shapes and missing lengths. We’ve been exploring the relationship between these two measurements—understanding that while perimeter is the total distance around the edge of a 2D shape, area is the amount of space inside it.
The students have been working hard on using formal formulas, such as area = length x width and applying them to more complex, rectilinear shapes. We have also been exploring how to find the area of any triangle and applying the formula, perpendicular height x base divided by 2.
Science – which exercise raises our heart rate the most?
It was trainers and stopwatches at the ready this week as Year 6 investigated which exercise would raise their heart rate the most. Children worked in groups to think of 3/4 exercises to do and monitored their heart rates before and after a minute of exercise to see how much each one impacted their pulse. Finding their pulse was tricky at times (we had a few children who insisted their pulse had disappeared!) but we had lots of fun in the glorious sunshine and got our hearts racing too.
