Year 3 Blog 20.3.26

It has been another lovely week in Year 3, made even better by some sunshine!

Maths
This week, we have continued learning more about fractions. Children compared and ordered fractions when both have the same denominator but different numerators. After looking at the denominators, children ordered them from smallest to largest. Children used their understanding to determine the values of different pieces of ribbon and water using the number of intervals to represent the different fractions. We then moved on to looking at fractions on a number line, and children had to work out the value of each interval to find the whole.

English
We have been enjoying learning more about Ernest Shackleton and his journey on the Endurance. In our lessons, we have been reading various diaries and identifying key features. We learned about the perfect present tense and used our understanding to correct sentences and write some of our own. Next week, we will plan our diaries and write an entry from the perspective of a crew member.

Geography
This week, we have enjoyed comparing the UK climate to the Antarctic climate as part of a discussion about where we would like to live for a year and why. Children created mini fact files, noting the strengths and weaknesses of each, which they used to decide where they would live.

Science
The children learnt all about skeletons this week in Science! They began by sorting a range of animals into vertibrates (has a skeleton) and invertibrates (doesn’t have a skeleton) and although most were fairly obvious, there were a few surprises, including the fact that snakes and eels have skeletons! The children learnt that the main purpose of our skeleton is to protect our organs, support us and allow us to move, with the help of our joints and muscles too. Finally, the children asked their own questions about skeletons and researched the answers independently.
