Year 1 News – 7.11.25

The children have had a very exciting first week back. We started our topic on the Great Fire of London and a lot of our lessons have focused on this.

Geography

We looked at where London is in the United Kingdom. We talked about capital cities and we learnt about some of the landmarks in London.

The children also enjoyed looking at maps and globes.

History

We have begun to find out about the Great Fire of London. To start with, we looked at the differences between London today and London during the Tudor times. Then we focused on where and why the fire started and what impact it had. Looking at the differences between London now and then helped them to understand why the fire destroyed so many houses.

English

In our whole class reading lesson, we read a non-fiction book about the Great Fire of London and the children used retrieval skills to answer questions about the text.

Then they used this knowledge and what they had learnt in the history lessons to write facts about the Great Fire of London.

Role Play and Art

The children are having fun in our new role-play areas. They have also enjoyed creating Tudor-style houses.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the phonemes – i-e/o-e/u-e/c making a s sound, such as circle, city.

Maths

We have continued to use part-whole models. The children have also been writing number sentences.

PE

1GC had their first lesson with Northern Arts dance. They are looking forward to having these lessons each week this half term!

Odd Socks Day

On Monday, the children can come to school wearing odd socks! This is linked to Anti-Bullying week.

Trip Reminder

Thank you to everyone who has paid for our visit to Temple Newsam. Please can you make your payment by the 14th November. We need a few more adults to accompany 1H on their trip. Is anyone free to help, please?

Homework

Homework books have been sent home today. The children are excited about finding out more about the Fire of London.

We recommend reading at least 4 times a week. Please write in your child’s reading record when you have read with them.

There are assignments on Mathletics to be completed over this half term, please. Children who earn 1000 points or more in one week will receive a certificate.

Children also have access to Fast Phonics, Oxford Owl and Purple Mash. The login details are in their reading records.

Have a great weekend.
