Year 1 News – 27.2.26

Science

We have started our new topic on the human body. We started the lesson by thinking about what might be inside our bodies. The children drew what they thought might be inside and stuck them onto a human body outline.

We then learnt lots about what is actually inside our body, what those things look like and what they do. We stuck them in the correct place on another human body outline.

We then labelled a diagram of a body in our books.

Role Play Fun!

The children are enjoying our new hospital role-play areas and exploring their senses. They are having fun bandaging up their friends!

English

We continued with our science topic in our English lessons this week. We used books and videos to find out lots of interesting body facts! Did you know a human adult skeleton has 206 bones? Interestingly, a baby’s skeleton has more! The children wrote some fantastic facts.

Maths

We have been learning about Doubles and Near Doubles in our maths lessons. The questions about near doubles were a bit tricky!

Art

We looked back at the pencil drawing self-portraits we did at the start of Year 1. This week, we have drawn another self-portrait and tried to add more features and details. The children were pleased with their improvements.

PHSE

We did a Mindmate lesson on strong emotions. First, we ‘voted with our feet’ to say if different scenarios were kind, unkind, fair, unfair, right or wrong. Then we watched an episode of “Topsy and Tim” and discussed where we could see unkind behaviours and how we might be able to resolve these. We spoke about the importance of kindness and enjoyed a lovely book called ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ The children then spent time filling each other’s buckets by writing kind things about one another inside them.

PPA Lessons

This half term, on a Friday afternoon, the children are doing a new rotation of activities. They will do the following lessons:

DT – Making a fruit salad with Mrs Kenny

Art – Creating artwork based on the work of Piet Mondrian with Mrs Cairns

Computing – Learning how to program the Bee Bots with Mrs Jones

RE – Learning about our Wonderful World with Mrs Thornton

World Book Day

This year, we are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. We have lots of exciting events and activities planned. Our theme this year is ‘Go all in’ in line with the National Year of Reading.
This is a national campaign to encourage more people to read. If you’re into it, read into it! Children can come to school dressed in an outfit to represent their hobbies or interests. For example: sports kit, apron and chef’s hat, dressed as their favourite author, artist, pop star or idol! Children can also still, of course, come dressed as their favourite book character.

Mystery Reader – Would you like to share a story with your child’s class? The children loved our Secret Readers in Reception. Please email your child’s class teacher if you would be willing to come in during March to read a story. Shhh, it’s a secret!

George Webster Visit

Please click here to place your order. Please note there will be no spare copies on the day, so all orders must be placed in advance by Monday 2nd March and payment by CASH only in a named envelope with your child’s class by Friday 13th March.
