Year 1 News – 26.9.25

Oliver’s Vegetables

We arrived at school on Monday to find some vegetables in our classroom and a book and a letter from a boy called Oliver!

Oliver asked us to visit the school farm to harvest some vegetables to make vegetable soup. We also enjoyed seeing all the animals!

We looked at various pieces of kitchen equipment, including chopping boards, peelers, knives and blenders. We used the equipment to prepare our vegetables for the soup.

After the soup was cooked, we all had a taste. There were some mixed opinions!

Phonics

This week, the children have learnt the phonemes – ay/ou/ie/ea.

English

In our English lessons, we learnt that a recount is a type of writing that retells something that has already happened. The children wrote some fantastic recounts of our soup day!

Maths

This week, we have been reading and writing the number names to 10. We also did lots of work on counting on from any number.

PE

In PE, 1H have been continuing their lessons with Northern Arts Dance and have been practising the dance to ‘The Pinocchio’.

Music

We have continued practising on how to find the pulse of a song. We also began playing along to the beat with the claves.

Art

In Art, we have focused on mixing primary and secondary colours to make a colour wheel.

Homework

Purple homework books have been sent home today with a maths task to be completed by Tuesday 7th October. Please support your child to complete this task.

Children should be reading four times a week with an adult at home. Please write in your child’s reading record when they have read. It is recommended that children read their reading books three times to help build up fluency and confidence.

Your child has access to Mathletics, Fast Phonics, Oxford Owl and Purple Mash. The login details for these websites are in your child’s reading record. We have assigned some maths tasks on Mathletics for your child to complete this half term.
