Year 1 News – 21.11.25
Temple Newsam
The highlight of our week has been our trip to Temple Newsam. The children were thoroughly engaged in the Great Fire of London workshop and enjoyed looking around the farm. Thank you to all the parents who came with us. We hope you enjoyed it too.

English
In our English lessons this week, we have read the poem ‘A Tiny, Burning Flame’. This poem is all about how the Great Fire of London started and spread across the city.
We looked at different types of poetry and learnt that a concrete poem takes the shape of what it is about. They then wrote some fantastic concrete poems all about fire.

Phonics
We have continued to revise all the phase 5 phonemes learnt so far in Year 1. Please keep practising them at home. The children all have login details for Fast Phonics and Oxford Owl in their reading records. They have all been assigned books on Oxford Owl.
Maths
We have continued to learn about fact families and number bonds in our maths lessons this week.
Computing
On Monday, 1GC looked at Purple Mash and how we can use the ‘topics’ section to find things we are interested in. We looked at the ‘animals’ topic and the “animal needs” template. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to complete individual work on the Chromebooks, so this activity has been assigned for the children to try at home if you would like. Children could just explore the ‘topics’ section, or they could complete the assigned activity. Instructions for that are below:
- Log in to Purple Mash. Go to your alerts – click the bell icon at the top of the Purple Mash home page.
- Open the “Animal Needs” template from your alerts.
- Add an animal image by clicking inside the image box on the template.
- Type the name of the animal in the text box underneath the picture.
- Save your work into your own My Work folder with an appropriate file name.
- For an extra challenge, try adding a sentence or two about each animal!
Additionally, Purple Mash has also published a helpful guide called Parenting in a Digital World, offering tips and advice on how to keep your child safe online. Please take a look at the link for additional support.
Church Visit
The children have all brought home a letter about our visit to St John’s church. We will need some volunteers to help us on this visit.
A Miracle in Town
Thank you to everyone who has helped their child learn their lines for our nativity. We sent these home last Friday. The children have brought home a letter about costumes today.
Have a great weekend.
