Year 1 – 27.06.25
Phonics
In phonics this week we have revised the phonemes / graphemes ie/igh/i-e, oo/ew/ue/u-e, ow/ou and er/ir/ur. We have also practised reading and spelling all of the year 1 common exception words.
Maths
In maths we have continued to look at numbers to 100. We started the week by finding one more and one less than a number to 100. We then started comparing numbers within 100 using the language of greater than, less than and equal to. We also used the symbols >, < and = to compare.

English
In English we have been enjoying lots of poems about the seaside. We have started to practise a class poem to perform at the whole school poetry slam in the next couple of weeks.
We also looked at the ‘ed’ suffix and practised forming the capital letters F, G, H, I and J.
Science
In science we learnt that we can group animals based on their diet. We learnt that some animals only eat meat (carnivores), some animals only eat plants (herbivores), and some animals eat meat and plants (omnivores). We then conducted a very messy experiment where we dissected different animal’s poo to look for clues about their diet. The lion and polar bear poo had bones in so we knew they must be carnivores. The sheep and elephant poo had grass in so we knew they must be herbivores. The chimp and hedgehog poo had small bones and grass in so we knew they must be omnivores.

History
In history we continued with our work on seaside holidays in the past. We looked at similarities and differences between seaside holidays now and then and sorted them into a table.
Computing
We have continued with our work on pictograms. This week we used Purple Mash to create a class pictogram about our favourite fruit.

PSHE
We continued with our topic on money. We spoke about how we can save our money to buy more expensive things. We discussed safe and not safe places to keep our money.

Lion Learners
To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 10th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.45 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 4th July. If you need a reminder of your login details please contact the office.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
