Year 1 – 20.06.25
Phonics
In phonics we have revised the phonemes/ graphemes ch, ph, qu, sh, th, wh, oa, oe, o-e, ow, a-e, ai, ay, ea, ee, e-e, and ey. The children have continued to practise reading and writing all of the Year 1 common exception words.
English
In English we have been writing a recount of our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. The children have impressed us with their use of time connectives, conjunctions and adjectives.

Maths
In maths we have started to look at numbers to 100. We have practised counting forwards and backwards across 100, writing numbers to 100 and representing numbers to 100 on a number line. We have also used base 10 to partition numbers to 100 into tens and ones.

Science
In science we learnt that animals can be categorised into five main groups. These groups are birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians and fish. We looked at the features of each group and then spent time identifying and classifying a range of different animals.
History
In history we looked at this picture of the seaside from nearly 100 years ago.

We discussed what it might be a picture of and what it might be used for. The children made some fantastic suggestions including a life boat, a car and a way of transporting water.
We discovered that it was picture of a bathing machine. In Victorian times, people would get changed into their swimwear in a bathing machine. The bathing machine would then be pulled out to sea and people would get out of it and straight into the sea to swim and bathe.
PSHE
In PSHE we started our topic on money. We discussed how people get money and what money can be used for. The children then all decided how they would spend or save £10.
Computing
In computing we started our new unit on pictograms. We found out that a pictogram is a visual way of displaying data through a picture. The children then created their own whole class pictogram to investigate how we travel to school.

PE
1B thoroughly enjoyed their first gymnastics session with our coach. We will continue to enjoy these sessions every Monday until the end of term.

Lion Learners
To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 10th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.45 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 4th July. If you need a reminder of your login details please contact the office.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
