Year 1 – 16.05.25

Phonics

In phonics this week we revised split digraphs, g says j, c says s and silent letters. We have also been practising reading and writing all of the tricky words we have learnt so far.

English

In English we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and acted out the story. The children then planned and started writing a retelling with their own characters. It looks like we’re going to get some very interesting and fun stories.

Maths

In maths we have looked at grouping and sharing. We have placed objects into equal groups and looked at how many there are altogether. We have also taken an amount of objects and shared them into equal groups.

Design Technology

We got a letter from the Three Billy Goats Gruff asking the children to build them a new bridge as the troll kept breaking theirs. The children worked in groups to build bridges and troll traps out of different materials. We were impressed with how well they communicated and worked together.

We then tested the bridges by seeing how many goats the bridge could hold and if the troll trap worked. Finally, we evaluated the bridges in our books.

In both classes, all bridges held all three goats showing how well the children designed and built as a team. They were all very proud of their bridges!

Geography

In geography we learnt about the four capital cities of the United Kingdom. All children were very confident in knowing that London is the capital city of England.

Can your child remember all four capital cities of the United Kingdom? They might enjoy practising with this fun song.

PSHE

On Thursday we had a Mindmate lesson on being different. We looked at things that make us the same and different and used Elmer as an example to show that being your own unique self is important. The children then drew pictures of their own special and unique animal.

On Friday, we discussed feelings. We were very impressed with how many emotions the children can name and their mature and thoughtful suggestions of what someone can do when they feel angry. We looked at the feelings happy, sad, angry and afraid and talked about what this looks and feels like in our bodies.
