Rodley Nature Reserve

The highlight of our week has been our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve. Both classes had a wonderful day and it was fantastic to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic in all of the activities.

We started the day with a nature walk around the reserve. We spent time in the hides and saw lots of wonderful birds including herons, oyster catches, and swans and cygnets! We collected things throughout our walk to create our own wonderful pieces of artwork on sticky boards.

We had a lovely picnic in the sunshine and then moved onto complete a rotation of three activities in the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed pond dipping. The children were fantastic at finding a variety of different creatures including snails, beetles, water boatmen, dragonfly larvae, and even some small fish!

We had a brilliant bug hunt were the children carefully collected different insects they found using a paintbrush and a collecting pot. They observed the insects closely before releasing them back.

We also really enjoyed a fun and informative bee talk. The children acted out being bees collecting the nectar and pollen from the flowers. We learnt lots of interesting facts. Did you know that a bee works its entire life collecting nectar to create less than half a teaspoon of honey?

Phonics

We have completed the Phonics Screening Check this week. We are very proud of how hard the children have worked in phonics throughout the year. Your child’s score will be shared with you in their end of year report.

English

This week we have looked at suffixes. We have used the suffix ‘ing’ to talk about a verb in the present tense and the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to make comparisons.

The children have really enjoyed this song.

Maths

In maths this week we have been looking at position and direction. The children have looked at describing turns and using the language of left, right, forwards, backwards, above and below to describe position and direction. We finished the week looking at ordinal numbers including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th to describe position.

Caterpillars

Our caterpillars have been continuing to grow. The children are shocked at how much they have grown in just one week!

Art

We have been busy making Father’s Day cards in art. They should be in your child’s bookbag today.

Lion Learners

To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 10th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.45 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 4th July.  If you need a reminder of your login details please contact the office.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
