Phonics

In phonics we have learnt the phonemes ar in words such as car, park, star, harp. We have learnt ur – surf, burn and oo (long vowel sound oooo) – spoon, moon. Our new hard to read and spell words – all, are. Please use the new flashcards to practice the new words and sounds.

Reading

The children do read every day at school either as a whole class or in small groups. Please can you make sure your child is reading their reading books at least 3 times a week. It is so important to help the children with their fluency and recognition of digraphs and trigraphs in words. If your child’s books have not been changed, this may be because they haven’t read or not read enough times.

Maths

This week we have been using our subitising skills (seeing the quantity without counting) to help our class puppet Gertrude learn this skill. We looked carefully at arrangements of dots and then closed our eyes to visualise and explain what we saw. We have represented quantities in different ways and played a range of games to help match numerals to quantities.

RE

In RE we have already talked about what places are special to us. This week we have looked at special places for Christians – churches. We looked at different churches and noticed what was the same or different. We listened to church bells and discussed when they would be played. The children then created their own stained glass window pictures.

Expressive Arts and Design

This term we have introduced masking tape. We have shown the children how they can tear the tape and colour over it. We have been busy making space rockets!

Music

In music we have learnt a new word ‘pulse’. It is like the rhythm of the beat of your heart or the tick tock of a clock. We used instruments to hear the pulse when we sang ‘5 Little Monkey’s. The children did a super job and even stopped playing their instrument when the crocodile went ‘SNAP’.

Going into Space

We have been reading this non-fiction book this week. We have shown the children how to use a contents page. The children have enjoyed learning lots of facts about space.

Have a great weekend!
