Freezing, fractions and funny joints!

Maths
We have been using our understanding of fractions to work out different values on a number line. Children have been able to work out the value of each interval after recognising the number of parts and identifying the number 1 as a whole. We then moved on to looking at equivalences on a number line using fractions. The children are already more familiar with this word and recognise that this can mean that something is equal to/same as. Children added fractions onto different number lines of the same length and used them to compare fractions, beginning with halves. Children looked for patterns in the numerator and denominator to work out equivalences. We ended the week using our understanding to complete and compare bar models. Next week, we will be starting a new unit on mass and capacity.

Dear diary..
We have loved reading Ice Trap and learning more about the perilous journey Ernest Shackleton and his crew went on. After looking at several diaries and identifying features, children planned their own diary, which included what they got up to, who they spoke to, what they did to keep busy and their worries. They used this plan to write a diary entry from a crew member’s perspective, incorporating key diary features such as emotions, first-person perspective, and writing in chronological order.

Biomes
This week was all about biomes! After learning about different climate zones, writing about them and comparing different climate zones, children are now learning about different biomes. Working in pairs and independently, children enjoyed researching different facts and comparing them. They found that some biomes might look similar, but certain weather conditions mean certain animals and plants grow best in other areas.

Bites and stings
We have been learning about bites and stings this week and how to treat them. Children shared their understanding of what a bite and sting might look like and then moved on to identifying casualties. We discussed the first aid treatment that is most suitable for a casualty and whether the bite or sting might be mild or severe depending on what they were bitten by.

Science
This week, 3BK had fun creating their own vertebrate animals after learning more about the importance of skeletons and how they can support and protect us. Children drew their animals and enjoyed discussing whether they would be prey or predators, key features such as camouflage, and the reasons behind their naming. They then used tracing paper to add the bones to their new creatures.
