Happy Half Term!

Maths
We started our week by learning more about the different ways we can work out calculations without going through all the combinations. We ended the unit and have begun our next unit, Length and Perimeter. Children reviewed their understanding of cm and metres and enjoyed looking at items in the classroom that were below 10cm and above 1m. We then move on to working out millimetres and drawing different straight lines using a ruler.

Writing
We began this term with a visit to the theatre to watch Snow White and we ended it learning about playscripts! Children read through scenes from The Gingerbread Man and identified different features of a playscript, including a cast list, dialogue, and character names. Children then worked in pairs to underline stage directions in a familiar tale of Little Red Riding Hood before moving on to work independently, adding stage directions that suited the dialogue. Using their understanding, children wrote their own version of ‘The Three Little Pigs, adding key features, and enjoyed reading and acting this out in groups! It was a great way to bring all of their learning together this term.

History
We had an exciting few lessons in history this week. Children recapped their learning so far and shared it with their peers. Last week, children were surprised to learn that scribes were the only ones who could read and write, and they came to understand better why their role was important. This week, when it came to communicating and sharing messages with others. Year 3 looked at papyrus and loved working out different codes and writing a secret message or their names on pieces of papyrus! They shared why communication was important and what life would be like without it.

In our mummification lesson, we learned more about the stages of mummification, and we also discussed who could be mummified and how many mummies have been found! Children learned more about the afterlife, which included the opening of the mouth and the weighing of the heart.

007 Mission!
Year 3 were called in by James Bond and asked whether they could help him catch more villains. He has been having problems because the surface area has been causing him issues! Children used Newton meters and made predictions about the friction on different surfaces, including carpet, concrete, and grass. Using their findings, children wrote a short conclusion and created a bar chart to share their findings.
