Year 3 and the Place Between

Maths
In Maths this week, the children have been learning how to add and subtract 2 and 3-digit numbers using a formal method. The children needed to ensure their digits were lined up correctly and to exchange where necessary! We then moved on to using our number bonds to 10 to help us work out numbers to that add up to 100. This was useful for the last maths lesson of the week, in which we estimated the total by figuring out the next 10 and 100. Have a look at the video to recap how to subtract with a formal method.

English

The children have loved writing their own versions of Leon and the Place Between this week! They began by writing an exciting opening for their story, before describing their own ‘Place Between’ and thinking of their own ending. Within their writing, the children used some fantastic descriptive vocabulary and engaging sentence starters, resulting in some absolutely wonderful pieces of writing!

Science

Year 3 learned more about mirrors and how they work this week. Children were given a range of statements, which they ordered in a true or false column after a group discussion. A statement was then chosen to investigate. Some of the statements included: ‘a mirror does not give off its own light’, and ‘you can see your face in a clear, polished piece of metal’. Children drew what they did, wrote down their findings and a brief conclusion.

Geography

This week, we zoomed in on Yorkshire in Geography! We began by locating the county of Yorkshire on a map of the United Kingdom and discussed that it actually splits up into 4 parts because it’s so big! We located some of its key geographical features, including the 3 peaks (Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) and major rivers (including the River Wharf, River Don and River Ouse). The children then imagined themselves as Yorkshire and wrote a persuasive advert to encourage people to come and visit us! The children mentioned attractions such as the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, the wonderful coastline and bustling cities!
