Year 1 News – 14.11.25
English
In our English lessons, we enjoyed the story Vlad and the Great Fire of London. The story followed the tale of a flea called Vlad through his experiences of the fire.
The children thought about what they might have seen, heard, smelt and felt if they had been alive during the times of the Great Fire of London. They worked hard to write some fantastic descriptions.

Phonics
This week, we learnt the phonemes y as in baby and city and al as in ball and chalk. We also revised all the phonemes we have learnt so far in Year 1. They are all trying hard to read with a partner.

We will be doing our next phonics assessment in two weeks. Please keep practising all the phonemes at home.
Maths
The children have been learning about addition fact families and number bonds to 10 in our maths lessons this week.
Geography
We have been looking at human and physical features. We learnt that human features have been built by people and physical features are naturally occurring. The children then sorted some features into human and physical. We used a map to mark human and physical features of our school grounds.

Art
The children enjoyed creating Fire of London silhouettes using a mixture of paint and collage.

PHSE – Anti-Bullying Week
The children enjoyed listening to this song as part of Anti-Bullying lessons. They have all been trying hard to be kind this week.
RE
In our PPA RE lessons, 1H have been learning all about the Nativity. We explored the story of Jesus’ birth and the journey taken by Mary and Joseph. The children thought carefully about the different characters in the Nativity story and reflected on how they might have felt at each moment. 1GC will do these lessons in their PPA lessons in a few weeks.

Christmas Performance
The children have now been given their parts for our Christmas performance. Year 1 are the actors and Year 2 are the narrators. Some of the children will be bringing home lines to learn. We would be grateful if you could practise these with your child whenever possible.
Our performances will take place on Tuesday 16th December at 9:30 am and Wednesday 17th December at 2:00 pm in the junior hall (KS2). We will send home more details soon.
Temple Newsam Trip
We are going on our trip to Temple Newsam next week.
1GC are going on Tuesday 18th November.
1H are going on Thursday 20th November.
Your child needs to wear their school uniform, a warm coat (we will be outside for some of the day) and sensible footwear. They will also need a packed lunch.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
