Year 1 – 06.06.25

Author Assembly

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Jenny York on Tuesday and had lots of laughs ‘meeting’ her characters Sugar and Blaze amongst others. If you want to read ‘Walk the Plank’, please feel free to download your free copy of this. https://jennyyork.com/free-ebook/

Phonics

In phonics we have revised the phonemes au, aw, ue, and ew. We also practised reading and writing words with consonant clusters and learned that final ‘y’ can either make the ‘ee’ or ‘igh’ sound. We also spent a lot of time in class practising for next week’s Phonics Screening Check.

English

In English we read the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’. The children then used their imagination to think about what would be in their bucket and wrote a description of their setting. We had some brilliant writing with good sentence openers, conjunctions, and lots of adjectives.

Maths

We looked at quarters this week and the children learnt that finding a quarter means splitting a shape or an amount into four equal parts. Did you know that a quarter is a half of a half?

Science

We started our unit on animals this week. Our first lesson focussed on looking at the physical attributes of different animals. Do they have fur? How many legs do they have? The children then worked in their hives to group different animals. In 1T, the number of legs was a very popular grouping choice. 1B decided to group their animals based on whether they were furry or scaley, whether they had wings or not, if they had any patterns and whether they were an insect or not.

Music

In music we started to learn the final song of the year. We will keep practising each week and then post our final performance.

PE

1T had their penultimate session with our gymnastics coach. The children did very well on the apparatus and showed great balances. I was very impressed with the how the children supported each other and that everyone had a go on all the apparatus even if they were a bit apprehensive!

History

In history we started our unit on seaside holidays in the past. We started by looking at pictures of the seaside today, 25 years ago, around 50 years ago, and around 100 years ago and placed them on a timeline.

PSHE

In our Mindmate PSHE lesson we focussed on working as a team and communicating with each other. First the children worked together to fit the pieces of a picture together.

Then we went down to the hall and the children had to work as a team to cross the hall, using two mats without touching the floor. This proved rather challenging. After some helpful hints, every hive completed the challenge.

Caterpillars

We have had a very exciting delivery this week! Five very tiny caterpillars have arrived in each of our classrooms. We can’t wait to watch them grow and transform.

Rodley Nature Reserve

1T are going to Rodley Nature Reserve on Tuesday 10th June.

1B are going to Rodley Nature Reserve on Thursday 12th June.

The children can come to school in non-uniform, ideally leggings or tracksuit bottoms. We will be outside all day. Please can you ensure that your child is wearing appropriate footwear and a raincoat or sun hat/sun cream depending on the weather forecast! There is no charge for this trip, but your child can put a donation in the collection box at the reserve. The children need a packed lunch. (Please do not pack any nuts in in your child’s lunch). Thank you.

Lion Learners

To enhance our animal science topic this half term, we have arranged for a company called Lion Learners to deliver an exciting workshop with an array of different animals on Thursday 10th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Year 1 children – they certainly will get up close and personal to these creatures. To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a contribution of £3.45 per child please. Where possible, we would like parents to pay using our online payment system – ParentPay by Friday 4th July.  If you need a reminder of your login details please contact the office.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
