Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 5 this week

Good afternoon parents and carers,

The children are settling brilliantly into year 5 now, focussing and working extremely hard.

They all enjoyed creating a double page spread entitled, “What have the Ancient Grreks done for us.” They were surprised to find out how many names and words we use today that come from the ancient Greeks, including Alexander, triathlon, helecopter and telephone.

In maths we have been completing multistep problems with addition and subtraction. This is always a hard topic to master and we would appreciate it if you could help your child complete their problem solving homework this week. Your child should also have mastered column addition and subtraction fluently. We have been putting extra work with children at school to check that they can do this but there are still a few that are struggling. Please check that your child is confident at this while they are doing their homework. Any additional support will benefit your child and really help their progress. There are also activities set on Mathletics and a competition battle between the classes set on TT Rockstars. Again any additional practise will really help your child’s progress. Here is a video of the problem solving lesson which shows the strategies and expected standard.

In English the children have writen a newspaper reports based on different stories from the Odyssey.

Here is an example of one excellent one by Charlotte.

Next week on Tuesday we will be having Greek Day.

Children should come to school in their Greek outfit but wear/bring a coat. They can bring a change of clothes in a bag if they have a club.

Here is a video of how to make an easy outfit out of a sheet.

We hope you have a great weekend and fingers crossed the weather is more Greek by Tuesday!
